According to a newly signed agreement between Chongqing University (CQU) and University of Cincinnati (UC), students in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering are expected to graduate with double bachelor degrees from both CQU and UC after five years' study and a master degree if they continue to do one more year.

On July 8, 2013, Yang Dan, vice president of CQU, and his delegation paid a visit to University of Cincinnati and signed an Agreement on Joint Co-op Institute with UC. The two universities will cooperate with each other on the implementation of the Co-op program, cultivation of application-oriented and innovative talents, students' career planning, and promotion of the transformation of Chinese education system.

At 14:00, local time, the signing ceremony was held at UC. Yang Dan, vice president of CQU, Santa J. Ono, president of UC, respectively on behalf of their universities, signed a Framework Agreement on Joint Co-op Program Cooperation. Liu Guiwen, director of CQU's Office of International affairs, Zeng Zuoling, deputy director of CQU's Office of Undergraduate Education Administration and Li Bin, deputy director of CQU's Office of International Affairs also attended the ceremony.

The CQU-UC Co-op program, first pilot projects in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, focuses on the educating of students' practical ability and innovative ability. It will adopt "4+1" model, by following UC curriculum. All the courses will be delivered in English. In the first four years, the students will receive instruction in Chongqing University, while in their fifth and final year, the students enrolled in the Joint Co-op Institute will take all their courses on UC's campus. Upon completing the required coursework and co-ops via the UC-Chongqing Joint Co-op Institute, the participating students will graduate with baccalaureate engineering degrees from both UC and Chongqing University. If the students continue their study in either university for the sixth year, he or she will get a master's degree from the university where he or she studies.

Following the UC co-op model, these students will begin co-op with employers in China in the fall of 2014 or spring 2015. They will integrate five semesters of paid co-op work into their academic studies.

In order that the program proceeds smoothly and fruitfully, CQU will set up Co-op administrative office, and complete Co-op managerial mechanism, to deal with co-op preparation, job development, career workshop, two-way selection between students and enterprises, evaluation, etc.

"I anticipate that the Joint Co-op Institute will have a tremendous impact not only on Chongqing University, but also on the city of Chongqing and higher education throughout China. In turn, it will bring immense benefit to the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati region by providing even greater opportunities for our students and global engagement," said UC President Santa J. Ono. "This milestone agreement serves as another indication recognizing UC's global reputation in terms of experiential learning and co-op. We're again making our mark on higher education on an international level, this time in partnership with a prestigious institution in China and with a focus on engineering education." Teik C. Lim, interim dean of UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) said.

According to the remarks delivered by Yang Dan on signing ceremony, it is the long term cooperation on research and discussions which began some time ago that have made the signing of this Agreement a reality. He quoted an old Chinese saying that Tell me and I forgot. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand to express his belief that the joint Co-op program is both timely and important as it will contribute to our ability to better tackle highlighted educational concerns, such as integration of theory and practice. He said that, Co-op program will contribute to optimizing the curriculum system, improving teaching methodology, educating application-oriented and innovative talents. It is also a breakthrough for CQU's comprehensive education transformation. The two universities will work together to develop a stronger relationship with each other.

VP Dan Yang expected that the first batch of students in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering will be admitted this fall. In future, Co-op program will be extended to other subjects.

The signing of Agreement has drawn tremendous attention in Cincinnati. Below are links to news articles written about the UC-CQU Joint Co-op Institute.
