"Status Quo and Development Trends-Workshop on Chinese Language Teaching in the U.S."Held in Beijing

On July 13th, 2013, "Status Quo and Development Trends-Workshop on Chinese Language Teaching in the U.S.", cosponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, was held at Beijing Language and Culture University.

The workshop invited Chinese project leaders in the U.S. and famous Chinese teaching experts from well-known American universities such as Columbia University, Princeton University, Ohio State University, the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Kentucky, University of Southern California, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dartmouth College and Oberlin College. It aimed to help domestic teachers, who teach the Master program of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, master and doctoral students to understand the latest Chinese language teaching situation and teaching philosophy in the United States, study the advanced experience and improve the quality and standard of Chinese language teaching to speakers of other languages.

The workshop covered seven topics, namely, new models and trends in teaching Chinese language in the United States; training content and models for American Chinese language teachers; status quo and prospect of Chinese teaching textbooks compilation in the U.S.; Chinese language teaching at American elementary and middle schools; Chinese linguistics and Chinese language teaching in the United States; theoretical research status and trends of the second language acquisition and cultural teaching in Chinese language classrooms in the U.S.. The workshop combined panels and Q&A. The panels were hosted by Lening Liu, Professor from the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University, the specially-invited expert of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and council member of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching.

Madam Shi Shuyun, former ambassador of UNESCO and the specially-invited expert of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Professor Cui Xiliang, President of Beijing Language and Culture University, Vice President of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, and Yang Jincheng, Director of Division of Teachers, Hanban, council member of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

The workshop lasted two days and attracted more than 400 participants who are mainly teachers of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from domestic universities, master and doctoral students in related disciplines, and members of International Society for Chinese Language Teaching.
